Fine Arts at St. Paul Lutheran School
Art Program
The goal of the visual arts program at St. Paul is to provide an outlet for personal expression in a creative, positive and informative manner. Students will learn the appropriate skills to express themselves in both two-dimensional and three-dimensional art forms in a variety of medias. Each grade level has a curriculum developed to increase the understanding of the elements and principles of art, cultural influences on art, and appropriate vocabulary. Artwork from various artists will be used throughout the year to enhance the understanding of the above areas and develop an awareness of the historical development of art.
Through a docent art history program, students in grades kindergarten through fifth are introduced to a different artist each month. The hope of this program is for the students to develop an appreciation for individual artistic styles and an understanding of various art forms.
To foster a pride in their artwork, student projects are displayed in the classroom, school office, school library, in various community exhibits and at the annual art show. Also, students are encouraged to enter community art contests.
Music Program
Music at St. Paul is developed around goals and objectives that allow the child:
- To make and perform rhythm, melody and harmony
- To understand and participate in sacred and secular music
- To read music and understand the notation system of the language of music
- To become acquainted with music from around the world
To accomplish this, music is taught in all grades at St. Paul. Instruction in playing the recorder, hand chimes and handbells is given to all children in selected grade levels. Opportunities are given for beginning composing and conducting. Composers, the elements of music, folk music of the world, and the American musical experience are studied in the middle school. Singing and rhythm activities are a regular part of the early childhood and primary curriculum.
Students in grades 2 through 8 have the opportunity to belong to a performing choir. Currently there are three choirs, several of these receiving superior ranks at the music festivals. There is also an opportunity for grades 5-8 to participate in a handbell choir. These choirs perform during chapel, occasional church services, and other special events at St. Paul and in the community.
The band program consists of two divisions: Beginner and Concert bands involving students in grades 5 – 8. Students participating in this program have many performance opportunities within the school and in the community.
A Christmas service involving students from 1st through grade 8 and a spring operetta are held annually. These performances are one of the highlights of the school year, and a source of much joy and pride throughout the school.
